What is Cannabidiol (CBD)?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of several naturally-occurring cannabinoids that can be extracted from the cannabis, or hemp, plant.

Most people associate cannabis with being “high” — the change in sensory perception that can occur after smoking or eating cannabis. However, CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that cannot and does not cause you to feel high.

Instead, CBD is linked to a range of potential effects and benefits, including pain relief, reduced levels of anxiety and improvements in certain health conditions.

In total, there are more than 80 identifiable cannabinoids that make up the cannabis and hemp plants. CBD is just one of them. There are also terpenes, flavonoids and other compounds that can be extracted from hemp.

Unlike THC, which is the cannabinoid that causes you to feel high, THC doesn’t have any major psychoactive effects. CBD is not listed under the Controlled Substances Act and is legal to use in the UK.

Over the last few years, an increasing amount of scientific research has taken place to look at the potential benefits of CBD. We’ve gone into more detail about this research, as well as the potential health effects and benefits of CBD, further down the page.

How is CBD Made?

CBD is extracted from the hemp or cannabis plant in the form of oil. This process is normally carried out using one of three different extraction methods, known as the solvent, CO2 and oil extraction methods.

The solvent method of extracting CBD involves using a liquid solvent to strip away the natural cannabinoids, including CBD. These cannabinoids are then separated from the liquid using a simple evaporation process, leaving behind an oil that contains extracted CBD.

This method is the cheapest, easiest way to extract CBD from the cannabis or hemp plant, as there’s no need for a producer to purchase expensive equipment.

The CO2 method of extracting CBD involves the use of “closed loop extractor” equipment and consistent pressure to extract CBD from the hemp or cannabis plant. This method produces a significantly purer form of CBD, with fewer contaminants or unwanted ingredients.

CBD vape juice products made using the CO2 method tend to be more pure and are often marketed as premium CBD products.

Finally, the oil method of extracting CBD involves using an oil, typically olive oil, to separate the CBD content of the hemp plant from other compounds. This method is typically used by smaller producers and isn’t widely used commercially.

After CBD has been extracted from the hemp or cannabis plant, it’s converted into a CBD vape eliquid by adding ingredients such as propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and flavouring.

Although all methods of extracting CBD have their benefits, it’s generally best to look for CBD vape eliquids, additives and other products that use the CO2 extraction method. Products of this type typically have the purest CBD content and the strictest production standards.

CBD Vape E Liquid vs. CBD Oil

If you’ve ever searched for CBD vape oil and other vaping products, you’ve probably stumbled onto websites selling sublingual CBD oil and other CBD products.

While CBD oil and CBD vape e liquid can seem similar, they’re actually two very different types of products:

  • CBD oil is an oil extract that contains CBD. It’s usually sold as a tincture (meaning you use it under your tongue), but can also be added to food, drinks and even applied to the skin as a topical solution.CBD oil is not designed for use with a vaporiser, meaning you’ll want to avoid this form of CBD if you’re looking for a product that you can vape.
  • CBD e liquid, or CBD vape oil, refers to vaporiser e liquid that contains CBD. This type of CBD is designed specifically for use with a vape pen or other type of vaporiser and is completely safe to inhale as vapour.

If you’d like to vape CBD, it’s essential that you only use products that are strictly designed as vaporiser e liquids or vape additives. You should not vape CBD oil tinctures and other products designed for oral or topical use.

Why Should You Vape CBD?

Did you know that vaping CBD in e liquid form is the fastest, most efficient way to deliver it into your bloodstream and enjoy its benefits?

Unlike capsules, body lotions and other products that contain CBD, the CBD content of e liquid makes its way into your body through your lungs. This allows it to bypass the digestive system and travel into your bloodstream at an incredible speed.

While it can take as long as one hour before you’ll notice the effects of a CBD capsule, the CBD you inhale in the form of vapour can travel through your lungs and into your bloodstream in just a few minutes.

This means that you’ll benefit from the effects of CBD faster, all without the slow absorption and delays of other forms of CBD.

If you already vape nicotine or flavoured e liquids, adding CBD to your routine is simple. You can use your existing vape kit for most CBD e liquids, or simply choose to add a CBD vape juice additive to your current favourite nicotine-free e liquids for optimal convenience.

Finally, CBD e liquids comes in several different concentrations. This means that you can adjust your dose easily to suit your needs, whether you use CBD for pain relief, treating anxiety, better sleep or simply to relax at the end of a busy day.

Potential Benefits of CBD E Liquid

Over the last few years, CBD has been studied extensively as a potential treatment for a wide range of health conditions. Although research is still in its early stages, studies are starting to show that CBD could be an effective treatment for everything from chronic pain to anxiety.

We’ve listed several of the potential benefits of CBD, whether ingested as vapour eliquid or in oil form, below, along with the current scientific evidence to back up each one.

CBD May Treat Some Types of Chronic Pain

Extracts of the hemp plant have been widely used as a form of natural pain relief for thousands of years. Today, modern scientific research is beginning to support what many CBD proponents have known for years — that it’s a highly effective pain reliever.

For example, a recent study [1] found that a solution containing CBD and THC mixed together was highly effective at treating pain and muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis. A similar study [2] found that this combination can also assist people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Other studies, including several conducted in the last two to three years, have found that CBD may assist people with other forms of arthritis, including osteoarthritis. As further research into CBD is conducted, we may see more information on its potential benefits for pain relief.

Vaping CBD Could Help You Fall Asleep

Millions of people, both in the UK and abroad, struggle with insomnia. This can range from an entire night of poor sleep to hours spent awake tossing and turning after midnight in a struggle to drift off to sleep for the night.

For decades, many of these people have relied on prescription sleep medications and widely available supplements such as melatonin to improve their sleep. However, vaping CBD could, according to new research, be the answer.

According to a 2019 study, CBD appears to help people who struggle to fall asleep due to high levels of stress and anxiety [3].

Although the study involved the use of CBD capsules, vaping CBD may offer even larger sleep benefits for people with insomnia. After all, CBD consumed using a vaporiser can make its way into the bloodstream in just a few minutes, versus the 30-60 minutes required for oral CBD.

CBD May Have Cognitive Health Benefits

One of the most promising potential benefits of CBD is its protective effects on certain parts of the brain, including areas of the brain that are affected by cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions.

Research into CBD indicates that it might prevent certain degenerative effects of Alzheimer’s disease. For example, in a recent study [4], researchers found that combinations of CBD and THC may be able to preserve and protect certain aspects of brain health.

Other studies [5] have demonstrated that CBD may help to prevent seizures in people affected by Dravet syndrome and other conditions. Like other research into CBD, these studies are still in their early stages, but fit into an interesting pattern of CBD’s potential brain benefits.

Vaping CBD Could Reduce Stress and Anxiety

An increasing amount of scientific research shows that CBD, whether vaped or consumed orally, may help to reduce stress and treat conditions such as anxiety and depression.

In a recent animal study [6], researchers found that the antidepressant effects of CBD occur at a similar level to certain prescription medications, including the antidepressant imipramine. Other studies [7] indicate that CBD can help people diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD).

As with the other potential benefits of CBD, inhaling CBD in vapour form typically results in the fastest absorption and most noticeable results.

Like other research into CBD, these studies are still in their early stages, meaning it isn’t quite possible to establish a full link between CBD and the treatment of stress, depression and other conditions yet. However, the results that we do have are certainly promising and interesting.

How to Vape CBD

Vaping CBD is simple. There are several different ways to inhale CBD as vapour, depending on the type of CBD vaping device you have and your personal preference.

The first way to vape CBD is to use a vaping device, such as a vape kit. To get started, simply add the CBD e liquid of your choice to the vaping device by following the instructions provided with the vape kit.

CBD e liquids come in a variety of strengths. If you’re just starting out and haven’t used CBD before, it’s best to start with a low-concentration CBD e liquid. After you’ve filled up the vaping device, you can use it as you would for any other e liquid.

The second way to vape CBD is by adding CBD to your existing vape e liquids. You can do this using a CBD vape juice additive. Simply mix the vape additive into your normal non-nicotine e liquid, then use it exactly the same way you would normally.

This method is ideal if you already have a favourite e liquid and don’t want to deal with a new, different taste when you vape CBD.

Remember, CBD e liquid and CBD oil are very different products, meaning it isn’t safe to vape CBD oil that’s designed for sublingual or topical use. If you prefer to vape CBD, make sure you only use CBD e liquids and/or CBD vape additives, not CBD oil tinctures or other products.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vaping CBD

Is Vaping CBD Legal?

Yes. Vaping CBD is completely legal in the UK. Unlike THC (the cannabinoid that causes you to feel high after consuming cannabis), THC is not listed as part of the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it’s legal to possess and use in the UK.

Can You Get High From CBD?

No. CBD is not psychoactive, meaning you won’t feel high after you consume it like you would if you consumed THC. CBD products are strictly controlled to ensure they either contain 0% THC, or only trace amounts of THC that won’t cause you to feel any high or other unusual effects.

Can You Fail a Drug Test After Vaping CBD?

CBD is not an illegal substance in the UK, meaning it’s rarely part of any employment-related drug panel. However, some forms of CBD contain trace amounts of THC, which could cause you to fail a drug test.

Specifically, CBD products advertised as “full spectrum” may contain very tiny amounts of THC (typically, just a fraction of a percentage). If you’re concerned about drug testing, make sure you only use products labelled as “CBD isolate”, which do not contain any THC.

How Long Does a Bottle of CBD E Liquid Last?

This depends entirely on the size of the CBD e liquid contain, as well as your usage habits. If you use CBD frequently, a typical container may only last for a week; if you only use CBD on rare occasions, a single container could last for several months or longer.

Is Vaping the Best Way to Use CBD?

While every method of ingesting CBD has its own advantages and disadvantages, vaping CBD usually delivers the active ingredient into your bloodstream the fastest, meaning you’ll notice its effects quicker than you would if you used sublingual CBD or CBD capsules.

Vaping is also quick, clean and convenient, making it a good option if you’re looking for an easy way to use CBD with minimal interruption to your lifestyle.
